Position: Phlebotomist

Job Description:

Performs venipunctures according to laboratory policies and procedures including the collection of timed specimens, blood cultures, pediatric and neonatal specimens.

Positively identifies all patients according to laboratory policies and procedures. Verifies identification of specimens and labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.

Performs screening tests and reports results.

Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.

Contributes to the general laboratory functions and practice needs. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training. Maintains compliance with laboratory and practice policies and procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies. Qualifications:

Previous phlebotomy experience with a pediatric population a must.

Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organizational ability and follow-through.

Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information

Excellent communication skills and exceptional patience and compassion

Knowledge of medical terminology and certification for CPR preferred.

Ability to effectively handle challenging situations and to balance multiple priorities.

High school diploma or the equivalent.
